Abstract

In many present construction typologies, forms and materials are observed which ignore the local climatic characteristics. As a result, these buildings depend on artificial systems to control the indoor environment, and are great energy consumers, mainly in lighting systems and air conditioning. The majority of architectonic typologies, typical of temperate or subtropical climate places, as the case of Pelotas (Brazil), approaches, in an empirical way, to an adequate adaptation, reflected on the spatial distribution, according to climate, which is evidenced in a refined traditional architecture as ours, and able to offer an acceptable level of environmental comfort. However, the disadvantage of the “ popular know-how” lies on the impossibility to scientifically formulate the principles, which promote its benefits. This paper takes as a reference the bioclimatic parameters which explain the environmental behaviour of buildings constructed in an usual construction systems, in order to determine the strategies which can not only improve these systems, but also have the immediate projection and applicability on the contemporary architecture for temperate or subtropical climate as well as the energetic benefits that can from here be generated.
