Abstract

This paper reports a preliminary investigation of the thermal environment of a planted wall under Singapore climatic conditions. A computer model VBFRED-IVY has been developed to simulate and analyse the thermal effects of plants on the wall. The simulations were validated against field measurements taken on three planted walls facing different orientations. The surface temperatures of a planted wall and a non-planted wall were investigated respectively. Five factors were taken into consideration in this investigation to explore their influences on the thermal effects of plants on the wall in hot-humid tropics. The five factors were density of plant cover, wall orientation, wall surface reflectivity of solar radiation, wall construction, and air movement on the wall surface.
