Abstract

Low energy non-domestic architecture presents us with a potential conflict. The strategies for exposed thermal mass and appropriate levels of glazing -to minimise overheating and maximise daylighting respectively -are often in conflict with acoustic criteria. This paper studies an existing building where this conflict has been recognised and subsequently acted upon.We investigated how the environmental perform- ance of the Law Faculty Library at Cambridge University has been improved by the intervention of a new glass screen. Two methods, monitoring and questionnaire, were used to analyse the environmental (mainly acoustic) performance and the occupants ’ response to their working environments. The data of monitoring before and after the refurbishment showed a significant improvement in acoustic measurements. The questionnaire be- fore the refurbishment showed a consensus that noise conditions were not satisfactory.Post occupancy evalu- ation is important in revealing and identifying the potential need for major and/or minor interventions, and it provides valuable feedback for future projects.
