Abstract

This paper presents the first results of a research project investigating the links between architectural characteristics and their environmental performance in the urban field. The hypothesis of this project is that a variety of outdoor spaces with different characteristics and especially different degrees of enclosure will create a more favourable diverse outdoor environment. The study has focused on semi-enclosed urban spaces, which have been classified into three main categories, the passages, the porticoes, and the porches. Two case study settlements have been monitored and analysed, the medieval settlement of Kastro in the Greek island of Siphnos and the city of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. The findings have shown that the degree of enclosure, the orientation and the building context are the main determinants of globe temperature fluctuation and therefore the environmental diversity of an area.
