Abstract

This paper analyzes two case studies comparing glass-curtain wall buildings and their thermal performances in a tropical climate. In tropical countries, like Brazil, this kind of building is yet common, especially in business centers. Having in sight the need of a rational use of energy in buildings our intention is to verify the occurrence of the greenhouse effect and its consequences on the thermal comfort and energy consumption in this kind of typology. A simplified thermal balance was used for analyzing critical office rooms, which were studied in the warmest times of summer months. It will be shown that using this simple method one can check both projected and built-up buildings (post-occupancy evaluation) related with thermal comfort. If problems such as uncomfortable rooms and/or overcharge in air-conditioning system are found, the method can help to find some ways to solve them by showing the main variables in the local heat exchange. This kind of analysis also helps the architect in designing and offers the opportunity to test his project performance even before the construction starts.
