Abstract

Man has always been linked to nature, seeking shelter and comfortable spaces. In the past, what he ate, wore, how he lived, and where he sheltered were all linked and associated to the climatic conditions and surroundings. Throughout the history of mankind, examples can be found to illustrate this relationship, sometimes instinctive and intuitive, other times rational and premeditated. Although there is much to be learned from past examples of our ancestors and their bond to nature, we frequently regard them as cliché, passé, or démodé. Most of the times they are ingenious and indigenous solutions. This paper aims to rescue native wisdom and instigate common sense, through a critical exposition reinforced by necessary experimentation. Numbers haven’t always been present in analyzing the thermal performance of architecture, yet reasonableness and sound judgement have. Generally, in hot countries like Brazil, the external life can frequently be more important than life inside the house. The outside is an extension of the house with invisible walls. In popular urban settlements, where basic needs are just about sufficient for the day, it’s important not to say essential, that one makes the most benefit of the environment it lives in an intelligent and sustainable manner.
