Abstract

Educational buildings often exhibit quite high energy-consumption patterns when compared to public buildings in general. University buildings stand out in this group since they shelter, besides common education uses, research and development activities, many of which need special equipment and infrastructure. As a result, energy consumption values of Universities, both for heating and electricity are much higher than those of other educational buildings, and vary considerably with the type of use. This paper describes representative case studies of University buildings in Greece, where energy conservation and renewable energy features have been integrated to the retrofitting process. Interventions include standard as well as innovative measures, which involve a combination of passive and hybrid solar systems applied to the fabric of the building. As a result, considerable improvements are achieved, both in users' thermal and visual comfort, and in the energy efficiency of the buildings. The project has been partly financed by the E. E. C. Thermie program and is participating in the I.E.A. Annex 36 project "Retrofitting in Educational Buildings - Energy Concept Adviser for Technical Retrofit Measures - REDUCE".
