Abstract

This paper shows the results of the author’s Master of Science thesis in building design. The overall purpose of this study was to analyse the external radiative exchanges that take place between one tree and a west wall of a building in the hot and arid climate of Tempe, Arizona. The first phase of this study was an experimental setup to obtain site data like air temperature, surface temperatures of the trees and wall, both in direct sunlight and shade through field measurements. The next phase was to analyse the effects of tree shading based on data collection in controlling incoming solar radiation. The last phase was to analyse the effect of longwave radiation due to tree shading on the building wall.
