Abstract

The recent energy crisis in Brazil called the attention to some priorities in design process, especially in commercial and institutional buildings, like providing more daylighting to reach more energy efficiency and comfort in buildings. Despite this, some old and recent buildings present excessive energy consumption and/or bad internal comfort conditions, due to problems like inadequate orientation, absence of solar protection, inadequate glasses and poor use of daylighting. The city of Brasília (15º70’ South lat.) presents a high daylighting availability that should be used in a rational way, avoiding excessive heat gains but providing sufficient illumination for visual tasks. In this paper, some buildings in Brasilia are evaluated from the point of view of energy consumption and daylighting utilisation and visual comfort, by means of illuminance measurements, interviews with users and technical staff and computer simulations. New solutions are proposed for a retrofit of the buildings, aiming at more energy efficiency and a better use of daylighting, and consequently better internal comfort conditions.
