Abstract

The tourist development in Cuba is a great priority for the country, and it is fundamentally concentrated on the island beaches and coasts, where they are located and where they will be built. These have brought a great impact on the environment. These facilities become into a huge energy consumers, due to inadequate designing solutions for guestrooms, that go from the absence and inappropriate uses of the shading devices and the architectural skin faulty quality, caused by the minimization of problems associated to the environmental physical operation on part of architects. The guestrooms constitute the indoor spaces where tourist remains longer and this is most repeated architectural element to conform the lodging subsystem and therefore, their design solutions that influence in the thermal gain transmitted to the interior space, rebound in a direct way on the energy expenditure as artificial air conditioning is needed for the facility. The design variables having the most important influences on energy expenditure in beach hotel guestrooms were studied, by means of a much more appropriated architectural design, in order to reduce the energy uptake in these type of hotels.
