Abstract

This paper investigates how modern cities function in terms of their metabolism. Urban solid waste is one of the most important indicators of how cities work in diverse aspects. The study concentrates on how programmes are successfully implemented in cities and how cities can change their urban consumption patterns from linear to circular, specifically with regard to solid waste. It was chosen two cities as main case studies – Munich in Germany and Curitiba in Brazil. Both are dealing successfully with the waste management issue. Munich’s system is based on high standard services, technology and policy to avoid waste production. The strategy adopted by Curitiba is based on a number of environmental innovations, which is part of the city’s master plan. The simplicity of Curitiba’s system and the efficiency and high technological solutions of the city of Munich signalize that they are not models for other cities but references to be perceived.
