Abstract

The latest changes on urban environment have made the incorporation of certain environmental themes in the architects’ education very important. This paper presents a teaching-learning approach of urban microclimatic issues, sharing experiences between an undergraduate and a graduate student at FAUUSP - Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. For architects, natural ventilation is probably one of the most difficult environmental factors to understand and visualize. So, the aim was to focus on the understanding and on the visualization of urban wind pattern and its influence on urban space and on a tall building design, trying to find a common language between building physics and design. Therefore wind tunnel tests were carried out in collaboration with IPT – Institute for Technological Research of the State of Sao Paulo, combining the same tests for training both graduate and undergraduate students. The undergraduate student aimed to design for his Diploma Project a tall building envisioned to operate with lower environmental impact in the city if Sao Paulo. The PhD student needed to understand how air currents flow in different urban configurations, the entire complex implicated effects and the visualizing and registering methods to understand and characterize these phenomena to develop further research.
