Abstract

Traditional construction techniques in Brazil are based on masonry and concrete and generate large amount of construction waste. Demolition of old buildings also tends to produce considerable amounts of waste material. Construction and demolition wastes are currently a large problem in large cities such as São Paulo. The advantages of minimizing construction and demolition wastes include pollution reduction, improved health, and better quality of life. More research is required in developing a more rational approach to these problems in order to achieve these potential improvements in the urban environment. This article presents an outline for research in the management and recycling of construction and demolition wastes that could provide directions for studies of the management and recycling of construction wastes. The achievement of sustainability will require reduction of environmental pollution in the extraction of raw materials for construction and better management of wastes. This work will propose a series of avenues for further research in the area of construction techniques that will enable the achievement of these objectives.
