Abstract

The most useful concrete characteristics evaluation tests are those that can be systematically used in-situ and in the laboratory, with the same efficiency. The research presented in this paper shows the technique of measuring water diffusion as contribution for assessing concrete permeability. A device based on this technique was developed at Universidade Federal Fluminense. The main purpose of the investigation was to develop an equipment for assessing concrete permeability in situ and in the laboratory, which is cheap, reliable and portable. The construction industry classified NDT as "Non Destructive Tests" (Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test, Gamma radiography, microwave absorption tests, etc.) and "Partially Destructive Tests", (Pullout Tests, Internal Fracture Tests, Pulloff Tests, etc.), that, indeed, they are NDT in relation to the main body of the structural concrete member. The test reported in the present paper cause a limited localized damage, it can be used for assessing concrete quality and durability of bridges, water reservoir, overflow-drawoff tower, etc. An experimental programme carried out the following tests: water absorption by capillary suction, water absorption by immersion, water absorption by capillary (Kelham Method), water diffusion (WD-UFF), compressive strength and elastic modulus. Nine concrete mixes for each three different coarse aggregate strength and three different water cement ratio were tested. The test results were analyzed statistically. Test results showed the WD - UFF as reliable as other tests, but last costly.
