Abstract

New tools for automated data acquisition like new sensor technologies, radio frequency identification tags (RFIDs), and wearable computers are being applied in conjunction with advanced design tools like 4DCAD modeling tools, with construction data mining and knowledge discovery tools, and with novel construction decision support systems, with the objective of developing advanced information technology project control tools that will provide project managers capability to predict and avoid problems before they even happen in a new way that we define as proactive project control systems. This paper presents this vision, available research in this area, and introduces the research that is being conducted by the Advanced Infrastructure Systems group at Carnegie Mellon University Civil and Environmental Engineering Department with the objective of fulfilling this vision.
