Abstract

ARQZE, Architecture for Extreme Zones is a research group born in the Santa Maria University in 1998. ARQZE has developed technical strategies for a sustainable habitat in the polar cap of Antarctica. The first project was the design, fabrication and installation of a polar station for extreme conditions, near a blue ice field at latitude 80°S. EPTAP, "Estación Polar Teniente Arturo Parodi", is an operational station for the FACH (Chilean Air Force). The design contemplated a user friendly and deployable structure, the use of solar passive strategies and the weight restrictions of aircraft transport. Garbage disposal, sanitary activities, energy and all operation systems were built on the criteria of appropriate and sustainable technology. Garbage and sanitary wastes are minimized, dried and compacted to be return to the continent. Water is produced by solar melting, its use is restricted to the minimum necessary and the used water is transported back to the mainland. Energy strategies are developed on the basis of local offers of solar and wind sources. The station has 400m², and generates a sustainable habitat for 30 scientists and technicians. It has been developed, fabricated and deployed by a Chilean professional team that integrates members of the FACH, together with professors and students of the UTFSM. This paper will include an exposition of the design, fabrication and installation of the 3 realized missions (1999-2003) and the use of technical sustainable systems and operational results (with images and plans).
