Abstract

Architecture has responded to climate for most of human history, but some buildings and climates have yielded strategies which appear again and again over thousands of years. It is interesting to compare these buildings and trace these strategies over time. It is also interesting to monitor some of these ancient buildings and compare them with solar buildings built in the same climate today. This paper examines the internal temperature and relative humidity profiles of fiv buildings in response to a hot arid climate. The buildings include one dovecote and one olive press from approximately 300 B. C., one Arab/Western building which has had varying occupancies since the mid 1800’s, one residence built in a solar development in 1989 and a Bedouin tent.
