Abstract

This paper analyses the practical use of Solar Heat Gain Factor (SHGF) and Shading Coefficient (SC) in the simplified calculation of thermal load through transparent surfaces. Uncoated single glasses and the reflective sputtered glasses are appraised. The transmittance (T), the absorptance (A) and the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) are obtained. The behaviour of those characteristics and their variation with the solar radiation incidence angle is analysed, through comparison among the different reflective glasses obtained by sputtering process (vacuum) with the 3 mm clear glass. The tests were accomplished using spectrophotometer, and the results obtained properly weighted by the energy of the standard solar spectrum in each wavelength. The analysis show that it does not exist, for that type of reflective glass, a constant value of SC, which varies mainly for incidence angles larger than 50o. The use of that coefficient, mainly for facade orientations where those angles of incidence are predominant along the day may lead to rough errors. Since the use of SC is quite practical and useful for the designer in the daily analysis of the available glasses, in this work we present a way for its wider use, with adaptations for the establishment of the tables of SHGF
