Abstract

The aim of this work is to investigate the role of vegetation with regard to thermal comfort in outdoor spaces in urban areas. Particularly, the effect of vegetation as a means of controlling solar radiation is studied. Some criteria to be followed in planning the use of vegetation in towns are presented. A methodology is proposed to investigate different tree species and their efficiency in controlling incident solar radiation on urban environment. Two kinds of landscapes were studied: isolated tree species and urban parks and gardens designed as leisure areas. Data were collected beneath the crowns of the studied trees, isolated ar in green areas, and in the open simultaneously. Attenuation of solar radiation was analysed as a percentage of integrated daily radiation under the trees in relation to the measured values in the sunlight. Other environmental parameters were analysed by their relative values in the shade as compared to the carrespondent ones in direct sunlight.
