Abstract

The substitution of vegetation by buildings or pavement in urban areas has changed the local climate. The thermal cycle is changed due to differences in the thermal behaviour between land covered with vegetation and land in the urban environment, due to differences in radiation absorption and emission and in the capacity to store thermal energy. The total heat transferred to the environment can be estimated by summing the contributions of the emitted and reflected radiations and the transmitted heat, including convection. These contributions can be calculated in terms of the air velocity, emissivities and absorptivities of the surface materials, convection coefficients, and sky and surface temperatures. This work presents comparisons of the thermal performance of a few types of paving materials frequently employed in Brazil. Three types were chosen: asphalt, concrete and grass. The following environmental parameters were measured at sunlight in daytime at hourly intervals: dry and wet bulb air temperatures, air velocity, globe temperature and surface temperature. Measurements were performed during January in high summer season. The energy transferred to the environment was calculated for each type of pavement. The thermal comfort was also estimated for all cases. Results demonstrate the best performance of grass as well as a better performance of concrete when compared to asphalt
