Abstract

Daylighting has a significant influence on the energy efficiency of buildings. To evaluate different daylighting systems, design criteria like maximum luminance levels are necessary. Daylighting design criteria were developed in and for moderate climates. Design standards like illuminance level, luminance maximum and minima as well as the daylighting factor are based on a maximum outdoor illuminance of around 60.000 lx for CIE clear sky sun or 21.992 lx for CIE intermediate sky sun and on a human eye adapted to the corre-sponding luminance level. This paper analyses and discusses existing standards for luminance and glare definitions under the special conditions of tropical latitudes. The discussion is based on actual measurements for the location Rio de Ja-neiro/Brazil.
