Abstract

Energy saving measures in all areas are, due to economical bottle necks and well known ecological problems, increasingly important on the agenda of the developed countries. Especially architects and civil engineers are particularly important in this context, as they exercise great influence on the energy consumption of one's nation, due to their wide range of scope of work/activities. They are responsible for urban planning with possible effects on traffic reduction and adaptation to the local micro climate, the building design and concept, the selection of the building materials and daylighting. Daylighting and daylight guidance systems are increasingly important in modern architecture. Due to the very high price level of real estate in inner cities, a growing concentration of skyscrapers can be observed. Therefore the ideal building layout for passive daylighting is impeded. To solve this problem, scientists and engineers started to develop daylight guidance systems. Today the first reliable and economically realistic systems are beginning to enter the market. Some already known systems, e.g. venetian blinds, light shelfs, mirror systems etc. were improved and their field of applications extended. Other systems are new developments and inventions: Transparent Insulation Material, Holographic Optical Elements, prism systems, anidolic systems, optical glass fiber systems, acrylic profiles, light pipes and laser cut panels. This article wants to give an overview of the latest developments in this sector, both fully marketable systems and systems still in being developed. Latest evaluations from 1997/98 of several systems are included.
