Abstract

This paper describes the sustainable design features and the methodological approach of the Guarajuba Ecohouse (13 °South and 39 °West), located at the Northeast Coast of Brazil. The house will serve as a demonstration project for minimum impact on environmental resources. The project concentrated on a design that could minimize cooling energy requirements, through improvement of energy efficiency and thermal comfort. The low energy features intended to lower the daytime electrical needs so it could be accomplished by the Photovoltaic component (Grid connected system). Water conservation and materials conservation were also part of the design concept framework. The evaluation of performance and feasibility of solutions were tested on different simulation tools such as ESP-r (University of Strathclyde, ESRU, UK), ECOTECT (UWA, Australia), Analysis (UFSC, Brazil), RADIASOL (UFRS, Brazil), DOE 2.1-E (LBL, USA) and PV Design PRO 4.0 (Sandia Labs - USA).
