Abstract

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) is often used in energy calculations. Although it works properly for simple glasses, the representation of glasses with exterior shading devices deserves more study. This article explores the issue through the estimation of SHGC using simulation in VisualDOE. Firstly, the paper shows the variation of SHGC for variations of solar radiation as it happens in practice. Secondly, the energy consumption of a hypothetic building in a warm climate is compared with the variations of SHGC and with the geometric indices to represent exterior shading devices.
