Resumo

In this paper, a thermal simulation of a Chilean low-income house is carried out for the climate of Concepción, taking into account different insulation alternatives. An economic analysis is made in order to estimate the profitability of an investment in thermal insulation, considering different heating modes and common heating devices. It is shown that exterior insulation with 3 cm of insulating material like expanded polystyrene (EPS) and interior insulation with 5 cm of EPS give higher profitability at the end of 15 years. It is also shown that superficial condensation occurrence on external walls are greatly reduced with insulation. When the inhabitant shuts down heating during night, it is shown that thermal comfort is highly risen by the use of thermal insulation.
