Abstract

This article follows a comparison and classification method aiming at assessing theeffort involved in calculation of credits within the LEED® certification process using BIM tools. We have modeled the LEED certification process, mapped the type of BIM tools used to supportcertification credits and estimated the associated stress level of employing such tools. BIM toolswere identified in terms of resources associated with parametric modeling tools (FM) andanalysis and simulation tools (FA). Results indicate that focusing on low effort level credits is notenough to achieve the points required for certification. A considerable number of credits mustbe pursued among those reachable through higher effort level or investment. The energyperformance optimization category, in particular, should be carefully targeted, as it offers thelargest number of available potential credits though demanding high effort level. The studyconfirms the potential for increased BIM use to extract information necessary for demonstratingachievement of LEED NC design credits.
