Abstract

Taking account the importance of shear bond strength in the masonry, this work presents a brief discussion on some existing methods to the assessment of this property, as well shows the experimental program results using the direct shear method. This test is carried out with specimens made with three stack bond bricks ("triplets"). The specimen has its two extreme units beared and a vertical load from up to down, in a central brick, carries out the shear in the joints. At the same time, it is applied a constant compression load, normal to the joints plane (confinement stress). An increasing vertical load is applied until the failure. The purposes of this experimental work were the following: to compare the behavior and the shear bond strength values of the specimens made with two kinds of ceramic component and evaluate the influence of the compression load, normal to the joints, in the shear strength.
