Abstract

This paper formulates an experimental investigation of the connections efficiency among walls submitted to vertical loads, using models of ceramic blocks in 1:3 scale. The tested groups were made up of walls, in “H” form, with continuous support just under the base of the lateral walls and being the vertical load applied on the top of the central wall. This way, the whole applied load in the central wall was transmitted for the lateral walls supported only through the connections, which efficiency was intended to be analyzed. Those connections among the walls were executed in three different ways: stretch bond with blocks hollow unfilled; stretch bond with blocks hollow filled; and stack bond, with connection filled and tied with steel staples. To obtain the results, mechanical and electric strain gages were installed, in this way it became possible to know displacements and deformations in different points of the walls. Tests were also accomplished in units and mortars, in the best way to characterize the components and its compression strength. Specimens were also tested, built as racks, with the objective of studying a possible correlation among the resistance of those specimens and the wall models in “H” form.
