Abstract

A very important step for the correct quality control of masonry construction is the evaluation of the degree of interaction between wall units. This interaction is normally expressed by the bond between bricks, blocks and mortars, which is fundamental for the behavior of masonry and particular important for its structural performance. Among many effects that have already been demonstrated, bond can cause variations of different significance in the integrity and overall strength of masonry because of the multi-axial nature of the stressing of brickwork and blockwork walls. The study of bond is not only a question of material testing. Beyond of being influenced by the suction of bricks and blocks and water retentivity of mortar, masonry bond is essentially affected by workmanship and several variables introduced by this factor. The main objective of the work presented here is to study the possibility of using a simple field test to verify the bond strength of masonry prisms submitted to flexural loads, considering all three factors mentioned.
