Abstract

In 2013 the course "Canteiro Escola Taipa Japonesa” (Construction School JapaneseTaipa, literally) took place at the Institute of Architecture and Urbanism of USP (São Carlos,Brazil). The event presented tsuchikabe technique, Japanese version of wattle and daub. However, unlike the rough appearance that often this technique is implemented in Brazil, theJapanese one has undergone extreme improvement, it has a wide range of tools and theprocedures are outlined in detail. The practice of the tsuchikabe remains handcrafted anddepends on the mastery of a worker to be properly implemented. From the observation of thetechnical implementation during the course, this paper aims to discuss different perspectivesinvolving the manufacture of Brazilian and Japanese versions of wattle and daub. Regarding thedifferences that involve the demonstration on a school and the implementation in theconstruction site, aspects such as physical exertion, satisfaction and autonomy of workers willbe assessed. This review will be based on the Sergio Ferro’s concept of Trabalho Livre (freedomlabor, literally).
