Abstract

Since the 1987 Brundtland Report and 1992 United Nations Rio Declaration onEnvironment and Development, the ideals of sustainable development have been influencingthe decisions made by the construction industry. In the European Union buildings currentlyrepresent about half of all extracted materials, one third of all waste generated, one third of allwater consumed, and half of all energy consumed. This paper proposes a justification for theviability of using regrowable biotic material building solutions to reduce these negative impactsand act as a more sustainable substitute for conventional solutions. A comparative Life CycleSustainability Assessment (LCSA) will evaluate the material‐energy impact and buildingperformance achieved for 100% biotic material building project in the Netherlands. TheMAXergy methodology and Embodied Land Tool will be used to provide a functional frameworkfor the assessment based on an ideal sustainable goal of a closed cycle product. The preliminaryresults of this assessment showed that the MAXergy building had 3.7 hectare/year/ m2 of floorspace less than the Dutch reference home it was compared to. With continued improvement ofthe methodology and research into biotic and regrowable material solutions, MAXergy will havethe potential to be a useful educational and practical platform for all parties involved in thebuilding industry.
