Abstract

A critical review of the lesser known published essays and reports by Victor and Aladar Olgyay reveals a rich stream of bioclimatic concepts that escaped inclusion in their classic well known books, Solar Control and Shading Devices, 1957, and Design with Climate, 1963. The dialogue between strong architectural concepts and the technical, quantified, and diagrammatic role of passive solar heating include “personal gain through patents”, “developing a modern architectural language”, “climate as adversary”, “the germicidal effect”, and “the latitude shift”. Yet these lost concepts seem more attainable than today's ambitions about sustainability and “green” architecture.
