Abstract

The ratio of the weight by square meter in building constructions is, nowadays, showing a decreasing tendency. Nevertheless, it is still far from what could be expected, considering the existing technological possibilities. Light Tech is a new current, that relies on the introduction of structures and materials, which are more effective in the relationship between weight / thickness and resistance, such as architectural membrane constructions. A lot can be expected from "intelligent" materials and structures in order to substitute those of the "blast-strength", not just in structural terms, but also in the field of passive and eventually active solar technologies. The weight reduction in bioclimatic constructions, namely by the use of architectural membranes, will only become possible with the introduction of technologies that might optimise and control the heat gains and losses through the external envelope. When attributing it some reactive capacities, the approach to the concept of “biological skin” becomes closer.
