Abstract

The importance of mass as a storage element in passive cooling systems has been well established, but the distribution of the mass inside the space also affects the performance of the system. A test cell built in the University of California Los Angeles to evaluate the radiant cooling potential of metal roofs has been used to analyse the effects of the mass position in the internal air temperature. Several series are performed modifying the amount of mass, its distribution inside the cell and the ventilation rates. A control series and three series of mass distribution are presented in this paper: with the bricks distributed evenly at the floor level, with the same amount of bricks distributed close to the walls up to a height equal to 65% of the height of the cell and with additional bricks to 74% of the height. A detailed description of the test cell and its measured thermal performance is reported in this paper while the predictive equations are presented in another paper in this conference.
