Abstract

This paper deals with the relationship between the general design and orientation of buildings and their electrical energy consumption. It is a well known fact that people require certain conditions of temperature and illumination to enable them to carry out their daily activities satisfactorily. Hence, the consumption of electrical energy is a consequence of how buildings are designed and used. This is apparently not normally taken into consideration in the design of apartment and office buildings in developing countries, particularly in small and medium-sized cities. With the purpose of verifying the truth of this hypothesis, a quantitative analysis was made of the relationship between the design characteristics and the consumption of electricity of two residential buildings situated in the city of Bauru, in the State of São Paulo (Brazil). The results indicated that the apartments facing west consume more electricity than those facing east.
