Abstract

In this paper the thermal performance of a building is analysed, built in the old part of an ancient and historic town of Portugal – Braga. The building has a rectangular layout with its longitudinal axis oriented in the North/South direction. The major facade (the fenestrated one) is west orientated and with no shading devices incorporated. The thermal performance of each dwelling was evaluated, in terms of its energy consumption. A study was carried out, comparing the results obtained with the initial solution proposed by the architect, the solution proposed by the Building Physics Laboratory and the results that should be expected if the study has been done in a previous stage, in parallel with the architectural conception of the building. This work shows how the layout and the orientation of a building are relevant in order to achieve interior thermal comfort, and how important it is to do these thermal studies in earlier stages of the project.
