Abstract

This paper presents a sustainable planning design strategy, suggested to be implemented in urban settlements, referring specifically to the Portuguese case. Therefore a model is proposed, the aim of which is to reduce the negative impact of construction.Taking as an example the littoral areas of Northern Portugal,we can see that the prevalent model of urbanism, without a large scale geographical verview of the environmental impact in the natural ecosystems, tends to an unsustainable future,as it is based in disperse separate zoning, rather than a mixed interconnection between activities and nature. As an alternative,a “linear city ” is proposed,,specifically designed to be implemented in the border of main communication networks (highways),which could result more efficiently in material and energy savings,as well as being capable of a better integration in ecosystems. Two aspects are relevant:the simplification of the construction process with a lightweight option, and a spatial integration of land uses and activities,in order to diminish the entropy within the city.
