Abstract

A testing facility includes two identical test cells, with one painted into matt-white while another in matt-black, for studying the effects of envelope colour, with respect to, thermal mass, window attributes, and ventilation has been set up in the Department of Architecture of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Experiments investigated the effect of thermal mass, windows, and natural ventilation were performed, under very different weather conditions: sunny, partially cloudy, overcast, and rainy days. The results suggest that addition of thermal mass and windows, and the introduction of natural ventilation diminished the sensitivity of envelope colour by different degrees. The study also reveals that roof does play an important role on the issue. Furthermore, the paper demonstrates the possibility to develop a predictive formula for daily maximum indoor air temperature which architects and engineers can base on in the design of low energy housing.
