Abstract

A demonstration system of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) has been set up on the campus of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The total installed peak power capacity is 8 kWp with PV module surface area of 60 m² on three vertical facades and one horizontal roof. Electricity generated from the BIPV system is consumed by the daytime lighting of the building. Utility power is used as backup so that the power supply is guaranteed. This paper will report the design and preliminary monitoring results of this project. A model building is simulated based on the preliminary monitoring results of the project for assessing the total electric power generated from solar energy resource. Solar energy can cover about 10% of electric power supply for a commercial building in Hong Kong. The detailed simulation results are reported in this paper. More electricity can be generated if the vertical PV facades are specially designed so that more incident solar radiation strikes on the facades.
