Abstract

South Africa has a serious housing backlog. The government currently provides individual houses on individual plots of land so that inhabitants can expand their homes in future. These badly located and poorly constructed houses are not sustainable solutions. Inhabitants spend large amounts of their disposable income to keep their houses warm in winter. Energy usage is thus increased nationally and globally. Some attached double storey units have been constructed in Cape Town and it is suspected that this type of solution is more sustainable. This paper sets out to compare the two housing solutions to prove that there are better and more efficient ways of solving the housing crisis.
