Abstract

The goal of the present study is to assess the potential use of solar energy systems, for space and water heating in urban buildings, in Mendoza´s Metropolitan Area (MMA), in the tempered arid zone of central-western Argentina. The existing relative solar potential was defined for the whole city. Real city blocks of high building densities were evaluated comparatively with “ideal” schemes that maximize solar energy potential use. The influence of Soil Occupation Factors (SOF) and Total Occupation Factors (TOF) is discussed. Population and building densities impact are included in the analysis. Provisional conclusions are put forward. The study should continue with the analysis of mean and low building density city environments in MMA.
