Abstract

design process for building renovation. During such renovation projects, design options are typically limited by the constraints of the existing structure. Simulation can be used to set priorities among conflicting design parameters while demonstrating how design goals can be met without making significant structural changes to the existing building, a fundamental requirement of building retrofit. As an example of the application of the design process, the paper presents a case study in which simulation is used during the schematic design of a municipal art learning center created from an existing, 5000 ft2 commercial warehouse. Since a major goal of the renovation is to establish a sustainable showcase building, particular attention is paid to diverse passive building technologies. The schematic design process is guided by extensive simulation-based analysis. Various building simulation tools have been used iteratively to optimize total building performance and predict the energy savings associated with design changes.
