Abstract

To help reduce emissions and to comply with new government regulations, electric utilities must support the interconnection of renewable energy sources to the grid. During the past decade utilities in south-east Queensland offered special tariffs for the purchase electricity generated by small PV systems. Two distinct tariffs were used prior to 1995. These tariffs proved rather unattractive to potential owners. In recent years, the utility company Energex introduced a new payback tariff, which on the face of it seems to be more attractive. Under present conditions it is technically feasible to introduce small-scale, grid-connected roof-top and building integrated PV generation systems with or without battery storage. Economic analysis show that a major change in the electricity tariff structure for PV and other renewables is required before residential PV systems can become an attractive economic investment with a reasonable and an acceptable pay-back period.
