Abstract

This paper is concerned with the optimization of solar energy heating systems intended for industrial process heating applications in India. For this purpose, a system model based on the Visual Basic program has been used to correlate the performance and cost effectiveness of the system with a number of key design criteria. The optimization of size of solar thermal system was carried out using f-chart method to find the optimum number of collector panel for higher efficiency of the system. It is found that the solar energy extracted by the solar thermal system is reasonable in the range of solar fraction 0.4 to 0.55. The money invested on solar thermal system to extract more solar energy above this limit of solar fraction is not advisable on economic point of view. The cost of solar water heaters manufactured by different companies was analyzed based on f-chart method. The minimum and maximum size of solar thermal system was estimated. All other costing parameters are also discussed in this paper. The f-chart method and cost optimization techniques were programmed in Visual basic package to analyze the solar thermal system for different locality. The software program was coded with all possible variables associated with solar thermal system.
