Abstract

In the present work a brief summary of the main activities developed in Cuba in the field of renewable energies is presented. Derived from this, the strategies for technical development and implementation are discussed. Cuban archipelago presents, until this moment, a poor national reserve of conventional energy resources and, because of this insular character, it is limited in the use of sources such as large rivers, Traditionally we have depended upon the importation of fossil energy carriers mainly oil. Nevertheless, in our country there is a great potential of renewable energy sources, that already provides 30% of energy resources of the country. It is the policy of the government that the economic development is only possible through an efficient and full exploitation of the national sources of energy, and particularly the renewable ones, something which is supported by a National Development Program of the National Sources of Energy. In 1993 this program was approved by the Cuban Parliament . In the execution of this program all national institutions participated and it has support of many friends of Cuba. At the same time steps are taken to create a legal framework to stimulate the use for these sources of energy in order to favor the introduction of advanced technologies Recently, the Front for Renewable Energy (FRE) was created, focusing on renewable energy development. The objectives for the FRE is to advise the government on the policy related to the use of renewable energy resources and to propose the most technical, economical and feasible projects . Within the FRE diverse institutions, entities, universities and research centers linked with this strategy activity are represented. At the beginning of the last year the FRE officially established the Program for Renewable Energy Development which will be present in this paper. This program declares that the Cuban Government has considered renewable energy as an important part of energy sector and mapped out a development plan up to year 2010.
