Abstract

The Government of Ghana has implemented a number of PV projects to investigate the conditions necessary for formulating policy on the use of solar energy to complement the grid-based electrification programme, particularly for off-grid rural communities. Field implementation started in 1996 and by 2003, about 6,000 solar PV systems of mainly solar home systems have been installed. Survey of off-grid homes provided with the solar systems revealed that there had been general improvement of standard of living of the beneficiary communities. Even though purchasing arrangements for the home systems were mostly made by the men, it was noted that women played vital role in making decision as to where the lights had to be installed in the house. Youth with solar home systems are perceived as hardworking and enlightened. It is about 15 years that the national PV programme was launched. The paper recounts field experiences vital for successful implementation of public sector driven solar programmes.
