Abstract

The objective of this study is to contribute to widespread use of earth-to-air heat exchangers by proposing a design procedure. This paper discusses the design method for earthto- air heat exchanger system using multiple pipes (multicool/ heat tube system) including cases where tubes are buried in a close arrangement. The method is based on the estimation of heat transfer performance, which was verified by performing field measurement for an actual system installed at a welfare centre building. A numerical analysis model was developed to simulate the system behavior and performance, and the heat transfer performance considering the thermal interference between tubes was evaluated under various design conditions such as number of tubes, arrangement interval, air velocity and length. Based on the results, an estimation method of the heat transfer rate for the multi-cool/heat tube system is proposed.
