Abstract

This paper studies urban morphology in central areas, concentrating on solar access on public squares. It focuses on planning codes and the impact of modifications in shape, distribution and built densities to avoid solar shading. Sunny spaces outdoors in cities with temperate climates can be enjoyed year round. Recognizing that green areas for recreation are scarce in dense populated city centres, the paper proposes to preserve the quality and usability of existing ones by guaranteeing their access to winter sun. A square in central Buenos Aires, Argentina is chosen as an example, showing its actual volumetric configuration, maximum buildable volumes following existing codes and potential modifications to improve winter sun access on the public space. In the conclusions some planning concepts and tools applicable are proposed and discussed.
