Abstract

Good quality of daylighting is believed to be closely related to improvements in student performance and healthier building interiors. However, based on reviewing previous research methodology on qualitative aspects of lighting, there is a lack of a shared agenda to guide investigators. This article describes the development of a research protocol to study daylighting quality for school buildings. This research protocol was examined with a case study conducted in 35 classrooms and 1330 students from 8 Secondary schools in Hong Kong. The result of the case study shows that Post-occupancy evaluation (POE) techniques including physical measurements and surveys of subjective response, as well as statistical analysis are appropriate instruments for studying daylighting quality in school.
