Abstract

With the incessant and uncontrollable growth of cities during times of domination and globalisation, urban centres are spreading upwards and outwards in the unbeatable desire to reach the status of megalopolis . In this irrational attempt, all that is disposable, including people and nature, are thrown aside to the very limits and boundaries of the urban centres. Growing like a tumour and spreading like a cancer, cities are disseminating illness from its core to its boundaries. Brasilia with its popular urban settlements is a typical example of a city thriving for development but recklessly growing faster than its urban structure and infra structure allows. This unquenchable thirst is responsible for delusions of lack of planning, lack of responsibility, and lack of anything related to human respect and decency. Feeding on ego, the rush to grow and attract investments, to modernise, globalise, and “megalopolise”, neglects people, environment, and consequently quality of life. This paper aims to show a small part of the sad reality of city growth in developing countries which mirroring developed countries ignore economical, social, cultural and environmental conditions, the very basis for a sustainable development. It also suggests the intervention of landscaping design to minimise the negative impact imposed on popular urban settlements. An intervention based on the inhabitants needs and necessities and compatible to their expectations is suggested by the data census.
